1. Layers of Córdoba - Archaeology and history form the base of this course in which a study of the layers of civilization above and below the surface of the city and province of Córdoba reveals how different peoples created and transformed culture through adaptive innovation using tools, materials, and knowledge. The historical background of the Roman ruins, Arabic/Islamic vestiges, Jewish and Christian/Catholic monuments will be the objects of historical interpretation and interactive onsite observation.
Taught by: Faculty from the Departments of Ancient History, Medieval History and Arab/Islamic Studies.
Includes visits to excavation sites and monumental Córdoba as well as actual experience with archaeological digs.
2. Visual and Performing Arts - Visual and performance art forms have a special significance in southern Spain, and Córdoba is one of the best examples. This class will explore (1) Art and Film, (2) Music and Dance, and (3) Theater through the intertwining of such artists/writers/directors as Carlos Saura, Federico García Lorca, Antonio Gala, and so on.
Taught by: Faculty from Departments of Music, Spanish Philology, Art History, as well as performance professionals.
Includes participation in one of the performing arts (song, dance, guitar, theater) as well as attendance at live theater, dance, and music productions.
3. A Spanish Perspective on Immigration, Human Rights and Identity. - In this course three main factors will serve to analyze migratory movements in Spain. First, human rights along with the mechanisms used in Spain (and Europe) to guarantee migratory rights. Second, contemporary migratory movements, their origins and the impact on public policy and collective perception. Third, the construct of “the other” in Spanish society from the perspective of ethnicity, cultural diversity, and the significance of race.

Includes conferences and interaction with activists, NGOs and personal migratory experiences.
4. Environmental Challenges in the City and Province of Córdoba - This course will present the numerous challenges faced by environmental scientists in the Mediterranean context taking into account the diversity of the Iberian Peninsula as exemplified by the city and province of Córdoba. Water, soil, air and sun will be studied with relation to the Guadalquivir River, the Sierra Morena mountain range, and the “campiña” so as to study climate issues, conservation of monuments, and land/water use. This area will be based on a cross-disciplinary view of science and its relation to humanities.
