Term 4 Courses

1.  Layers of Córdoba - A study of layers of history above and below the surface of the city and province of Córdoba.  The historical background of the Roman ruins, Arabic/Islamic vestiges, and Christian/Catholic monuments will be the subject of study and onsite observation and visits to excavation sites and monumental Córdoba. Taught by:  Professors from the Department of Ancient and Medieval History 

2.  Using Spanish to Understand Andalusian Art Forms - Visual and performance art forms have a special power in southern Spain, and Córdoba is one of the best examples.  This class will explore Art, Music, Dance, Cinema, and Theater through the intertwining of such artists/writers/directors as Carlos Saura, Federico García Lorca, Antonio Gala, and so on. Taught by:  Professors from Spanish Philology (Language and Literature)

3.  A Spanish perspective on immigration, race and ethnicity. - In this course three main factors will serve to analyze migratory movements in Spain.  First, human rights along with the mechanisms used in Spain (and Europe) to guarantee migratory rights.  Second, contemporary migratory movements, their origins and the impact on public policy and collective perception.  Third,  the construct of “the other” in Spanish society from the perspective of ethnicity, cultural diversity, and the significance of race. Taught by:  Professors from Social Sciences

 4.  Environmental Challenges in the City and Province of Córdoba - This course will present the numerous challenges faced by environmental scientists in the Mediterranean context taking into account the diversity of the Iberian Peninsula as exemplified by the city and province of Córdoba.  Water, soil, air and sun will be studied with relation to the Guadalquivir River, the Sierra Moreno mountain range, the “campiña” so as to study climate issues, conservation of monuments, and land use. This area will be based on a cross-disciplinary view of science and its relation to humanities. Taught by:  Professors from Environmental Sciences and Geography
